Dunmoe Castle…
Apx. 1hr 30min drive - 84 miles from Belfast.
No car park - in a field just behind a few private residences, only parking is a small section of grass at the side of the road - be careful not to block off the road for the residents!
As it is located in a field, the location can be quite slippery after a bit of rain - make sure you wear appropriate footwear and clothing for whatever weather on the day of your visit!
Not overly dog friendly as there are two stone walls to climb over, and another small fence by the church surrounded by thorns and nettles.
The name is derived from Dún mBó, meaning hillfort of cattle, which suggests a fort previously existed on the site beforehand.
According to legend, the occupant, George D’Arcy, entertained King James II the night before the Battle of the Boyne, and hosted William of Orange the day after. This supposedly is the inspiration for the following couplet;
Who will be king, I do not know,
But I’ll be D’Arcy of Dunmoe.The castle dates back to the 15th century, and was eventually burned down during the 1798 rebellion.
